A Homeowner's Guide to Landscape Lighting in BC

Outdoor lighting elevates your property, improves security, and extends the time you spend outside. Here's what you need to know before getting started in BC.

A Homeowner's Guide to Landscape Lighting in BC

The Lower Mainland has some of the most beautiful residential properties in Canada — but many of them go dark after sunset. A well-designed landscape lighting system extends the enjoyment of your outdoor space, improves curb appeal year-round, and adds a layer of security that motion-sensor cameras alone can't provide.

Why BC's Climate Demands the Right Fixtures

The Lower Mainland isn't just rainy — it's persistently wet for six months of the year, with humidity, frost in the Fraser Valley, and salt air closer to the coast. Cheap landscape lighting fails here within a season.

What to look for: - IP65 or higher rating: Fully protected against water jets. Not just splash-proof. - Corrosion-resistant materials: Brass, copper, and quality aluminium hold up in humid conditions. Cheap zinc or plastic corrode quickly. - LED over halogen: LED fixtures run cooler, use 80% less energy, and last 10–20x longer. All systems we install are LED.

Low-Voltage Systems: What They Are and Why We Use Them

Most residential landscape lighting runs on 12V low-voltage systems — significantly safer than line voltage for outdoor buried cable, with no permit required in most BC municipalities for standard residential installs.

A transformer (typically installed near your outdoor outlet) steps the voltage down and can include smart controls, timers, and app connectivity. We connect every transformer to a timer before we leave so the lights come on and off automatically.

What a Professional Install Includes

A common misconception is that landscape lighting is just pushing stakes into the ground. A proper install includes: - Site assessment: Identifying key features, walkways, and problem areas - Fixture layout planning: Deciding what to highlight and how (uplighting, path lighting, spotlighting) - Cable burial: Trenching cables at the right depth, away from irrigation lines - Fixture positioning and aiming: Each fixture is aimed during the install - Transformer programming: Timer and app setup before we leave

Seasonal installs in the Lower Mainland come with their own challenges: rain during installation week, wind that knocks clips off fascia, and frost that makes some attachment methods fail.

We use professional-grade commercial clips, clips rated for wet conditions, and lighting designed for exterior use. We also offer seasonal removal and storage so you're not up on a ladder in January.

Strata Properties

Many Metro Vancouver stratas allow exterior lighting on individual units with approval. We've worked with property managers across the Lower Mainland to get designs approved and installed within strata guidelines. If you're not sure what's allowed, we can help you navigate the process.
